Breastfeeding and Medication - May Spell Disaster

Author: Eddie Lamb

Breast feeding and medication is definitely a bad idea unless
you have already talked with the doctor and he/she could assure
you that there is no harm that can result from the medication.
The infant usually gets whatever food protein and other things
through his meals and from the milk he/she takes from mother's
milk.

Breast Feeding And Medication Can Be Very Dangerous - Always Ask
An Expert

Babies need their food every two-three hours a day. Breast
feeding at this stage would be great. However, you should be
sure that no medication is taken unless is okayed by a medical
practitioner. Many medications that work wonders (positive sense
of the world) may combine with others and result in total
poison; hence it is always required to closely monitor the
treatment.

The drug powers, dosage as well as the resistance of the infant,
all are dependent on how the body of the mother needs it. Many
times, even the tiniest dosage can create havoc with the infant.
There have been many fatalities in the past in this way. Hence,
it is always better to avoid medication while you are
breastfeeding.

In case breastfeeding is really a must - do so only before the
medication and ensure that the breastfeed does not pull in
anything from the medicine. Many times the doctor will prescribe
an alternative which you should have in plenty. Avoid even
headache medicine while breastfeeding.

There are many ways to avoid stopping the breastfeeding while at
the same continuing with the medication. In this way whatever
the problem can be treated while the baby is not deprived of
his/her share of breast milk, nor exposed to any danger. A lot
depends on whether the ailment is very serious and/ or for how
long the drug is/was taken. The length of the treatment, the
importance of the treatment and the reason of the treatment
would be clarified. The breast feeding and medication
correlation would determine the safety of the treatment for the
infant.

If one looked into details, in some cases, breast feeding and
medication do walk hand in hand - such as vitamins and
pregnancy. This is a good combination of breast feeding and
medication which can be encouraged throughout the time of
infancy and even further. There are cases where the medication
can be highly toxic to the infant while at the same time, very
good for you. Always consult a doctor.
